WSU is looking at more than $54 million dollars being cut from their budget over the next two years and about 370 job layoffs. The WSU Tri Cities Vise Chancellor says WSU Tri Cities will be experiencing the least amount of cuts. He believes the Tri Cities campus will come out better after seeing the projected enrollment for 2009-2010.

WSU currently is 140 students over what the state has paid to instruct but rising tuition may deter some students. For undergraduate students tuition will increase $870 for the 2009-2010 school year and it is expected to raise $1000 for the 2010-2011 school year. For graduate students the tuition increase could be anywhere from 5%-10% based on the graduate program.

Yesterday the WSU Board of Regents met at WSU Tri Cities in the CIC building where Laurel Piippo of Richland, a self proclaimed “cranky taxpayer,” criticized WSUs spending. Piippo gathered several pages of signatures from citizens who feel the same way. She complained to the board about the part time history professor who was relocated to WSU Tri Cities and is getting paid $245,000. Piippo also took issue with the fact that WSU President Elson Floyd has been promised $500,000 in deferred compensation if he chooses to stay at the university through 2012. President Floyd defended his decision to keep the history professor at WSU Tri Cities because it shows that WSU cares for their branch campuses by assigning world class scholars and researchers to them. The Board of Regents will be meeting again today and Laurel Piippo is planning to be there with protest signs.

WSU Tri Cities’ outlook for next year is looking great with admissions up across the board. There is the potential of 134 incoming freshman this fall, a 54% increase from last fall. Transfer admissions are also up this year from 157 students last year to 194 students, a 24% increase. Minority student admissions have doubled since last year with 152 applications for this fall up from 73 last fall.

Students traditionally flock to colleges during tough economic cycles – either for retraining after being laid off from a job or because they need education to get jobs in an increasingly competitive market. Jaime Contreras the director of student affairs at WSU Tri Cities has noticed that students are tending to go to state subsidized schools over private universities.

This Thursday March 26 at WSU Tri Cities the Business Club will be sponsoring a luncheon on campus beginning at 12:00 and going until 1:30. The luncheon will feature a panel of five professional women who will discuss their careers and give advice to students. Thursday’s event will be part of the National Women’s history month. The Business Club President Karla Mesplie says that this event is great for the students at WSU Tri Cities because there are many talented women on campus, in fact the ratio of women to men is close to 2 to 1.

The panel will consist of:
• Cindy Johnson, City of Richland, city manager
• Genoveva Morales-Ledesma, WSU Tri-Cities GEAR UP/Early Outreach, director

This Saturday WSU Tri Cities will be sponsoring the first Fun Run on campus in memory of a multicultural pioneer. The 5K fun run/walk, in memory of William Owen Bush, will be free for all participants and will be held on the WSU Tri Cities campus this Saturday March 28 beginning at 9 am.

William Owen Bush was a mixed-race settler in the Tumwater area in the 1800s. Bush and his family helped organize WWIA (Western Washington Industrial Association) in 1872. Bush also helped to start Washington State College in Pullman in the late 1800s by helping to write house Bill 90 which meant federal money could be used to establish a college for the study of the science of agriculture.
