Spring Garden Lecture at WSU Tri Cities

Come learn about the new trends in gardening at WSU Tri Cities Saturday, March 7. It will be a day full of classes about many different topics such as urban, suburban and condo-dwelling gardeners.

The keynote speaker will be Marianne Ophardt, she will be talking about new and upcoming trends in gardening over the next few years, discussing what gardeners will see in garden centers, plants and tools. For example in 2009 the hot colors are rich purples and bright oranges, container planting going simple not more variety in each pot instead just a single type of flower. Garden decorations are getting dramatic with pewter and copper even electric pink and acid green hues.

Ophardt has been a WSU faculty member for 28 years, directs the Master Gardener program and is the director for Benton County WSU Extension. She also writes the weekly Garden Tips column for the Herald’s Home and Garden section.

Following Ophardt’s talk there will be a variety of gardening classes presented by WSU Master Gardeners and Mid-Columbia gardening experts.
The classes being offered this year are: Growing dahlias, square foot vegetable gardening, creating a backyard habitat, landscaping with ornamental grasses, backyard fruit trees, xeric and alpine plants, honeybees and other pollinators, basics of perennials, rose care, composting with worms and basic perennial garden design.

Check in begins at 8:45 a.m. the last class of the day ends at 3:30 p.m. There is a lunch break at noon, lunch will not be provided but there will be lunches available for purchase in the students commons, or bring your own lunch.

You must register by March 4, by either calling 509-735-3551, going to 5600 E W. Canal Drive in Kennewick, or going on line to http://benton-franklin.wsu.edu. The cost is $22.
